DAN Training & Education
DES Trainer or Instructor Recognition

Intro | Find Instructor | Teach Course

DAN is interested in recognizing divers and dive professionals interested in dive safety. We are also interested in promoting continuing education because better prepared divers make safer divers.

DAN Instructors are obviously interested in dive safety, but some DAN Trainers and Instructors go above and beyond by teaching all of the DAN classes and stressing dive safety at every opportunity. These Trainers and Instructors can receive the Diving Emergency Specialist (DES) Trainer or Instructor rating with DAN.

To be a DES Instructor you must be an active status DAN Instructor in the following programs:

Plus four of the following:

You must have certified at least 10 providers in each of the five qualifying courses or 5 DEMP providers including the AdvO2 component and five providers from an additional qualifying course. Trainers must be able to meet DES Instructor requirements and have certified five (5) instructors in each of five qualifying courses.

To receive this rating, submit an application (PDF: 52 KB) to DAN Training with your $20 Application Fee. DAN Training will review the Instructor Trainer/Instructor Application to verify that the applicant has submitted course rosters representing the appropriate number of certifications.

Once your teaching credentials have been verified, you will receive a:

  • special listing in Online Instructor Directory;
  • DES Instructor card;
  • DES certificate; and
  • DES patch.

You will also receive:

  • invitations to preview future DAN Online Seminars before they are released to public at no charge; and
  • a coupon good for 10% off oxygen units or accessories; and
  • end quantity pricing on all training materials if your dive shop becomes a DAN Training Center.

To maintain Active DES Instructor Status, you must maintain Active Teaching Status in each of the five DAN programs included. There are no additional applications or fees once you have received your certification, but you must continue to teach at least one course in each program every 24 months to maintain active status. Moving into Sustaining Status in one program will inactive DES recognition until you regain Active Status in all programs.

DES Instructor Trainer

The requirements to be a DES Trainer are the same for the DES Instructor, except that you must also have certified at least five Instructors in each of the DAN programs needed for DES Trainer.
