Printed proceedings for the workshop Management of Mild or Marginal Decompression Illness (DCI) in Remote Locations is now available from Divers Alert Network (DAN) and the Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS).
Consensus statements from the conference defined mild decompression illness, addressed the progression of mild cases and their therapy, and discussed the issue of flying with mild symptoms.
Dr. Richard Vann, Vice President for Research at DAN and one of the editors of the proceedings, said the workshop, conducted in June 2004 in Sydney, Aus., was the first organized attempt to consider the severity of DCI signs and symptoms in the context of their management.
"A key conclusion was that a patient with mild DCI on a remote island or at a tertiary hyperbaric facility need be managed no differently except as indicated by factors such as weather, aircraft availability, personnel or material condition of a local chamber," Vann said.
